For the insurance company customer

You call the insurance company. You make several calls and write messages clarifying the claim, possibly with different claim handlers.

The affair progresses slowly or not at all. It requires a lot of clarification with several involved parties, documents and statements.

The claim process may be halted for a number of reasons: the claim report requires additional information, the insurance company has not reached the injured party or you, the insurance company is waiting for a statement from officials or outside experts, the claim report is stuck in the processing queue or there has been some other processing error with it and therefore no progress is happening.

If you are not proactive, the whole process may take quite a while.

You receive a compensation order that does not meet your expectations. You either settle with you fate or start investigating whether or not everything with the claim was handled by the book and if there is anything something more you can do. You read up on the insurance policy and terms. You go through the compensation order again by yourself and with the insurance company. You appeal the compensation order. You spend a lot of time on the case getting frustrated.

You receive a new compensation order. With luck, it may be more in your interest but what if it is not? At this point you have to decide if you are going to contact the Finnish Financial Ombudsman Bureau or even the take the compensation order all the way to the Insurance Complaints Board for review. If these actions do not change the outcome, will you take the case to court?

Whatever happens, one thing is clear after all this: the time and energy you put into the case could have been spent on something more useful.
